New Year's Resolution

I can't believe June is already gone! Where did the month go?? Brian and I realized we hadn't tried a new restaurant for the month of June. So we headed into Salt Lake and went to Acme Burger. Both of us were disappointed. I really don't want a blog on here that lists our complaints so I will leave it there. We decided that next month, if we remember, we are just going to drive around and pick a place, rather than have one picked out in advance. It just sounds more exciting and challenging. I still love this resolution and it really is serving it's purpose! Yeah for finally keeping a New Year's Resolution!!

Brian's Motorcycle Trip

Brian went on a four day motorcycle trip with two of his buddies, Kevin and Jack. Perhaps he will fill in more details but I know they had a ton of fun. They left on Friday and made it all the way to South Dakota in one day. They went to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sturgis and some crazy mountain in the middle of no-where. Here are some pictures of the big ride!

New Curtains...finally!

I finally made curtains for the kitchen and top of the stairs this weekend. I have had the material and curtain rods forever. I have just not taken the time to get them made. But they are finally done!

This curtain is at the top of the stairs. I'm hoping it will help keep the air conditioning upstairs during the summer and heat downstairs during the winter. Only time will tell.

These curtains are in the kitchen! I LOVE them! You will have to come and personally see them because they are even cuter in real life! Are you impressed the stripes actually match up??? Well, I sure am!!!

Writing Workshop

I had the best week EVER this week! I attended a writing workshop/conference all week at BYU. I went into it not really sure what to expect and came out excited to attend next year! It was the best thing I have done for myself in a long time.

I spent every morning with a group of 12 other attendees, an assistant and a teacher who is a published author. My teacher is Kathi Appelt, she is wonderful and you should go get her books. She has done mainly picture books but just published her first middle grade novel. Each one of us brought two manuscripts and our class critiqued them. I learned soooo much!

We got to spend 1/2 hour every day mingling with the authors, agents and editors. We could ask questions and learn about the publishing industry.

The afternoon was spent in classes of our choice. There were so many to choose from and I really enjoyed and learned from each one.

Every day there were writing competitions. We were given a prompt, or purpose, to write about and it was due after morning class. There were six competitions and about 500 attendees. I won TWO of the competitions!!! Winning one was incredible enough and then when I won again on the last day, I couldn't believe it. I even heard people next to me say, "Hey, that's the girl that won before." I guess I could take that in a few different ways but I'm just super excited andenjoying writing even more.

I also spent almost everyday eating lunch with cousins Heather and Jason, little Emma and Aunt Kathleen. Plus, some delicious dinners. They spoiled me rotten and it sure was fun to hang out!

I talked with one of the ladies in charge about being an assistant next year. She told me just to email her. If it ends up working out, I will get to go for free and still get my manuscripts critiqued and everything. That would be awesome!

Anyways, I have some new goals for writing and hope to get a publishing contract by the end of the year. Although, it then takes two to three years to get a book published. I'm so excited! I really do feel like I discovered a talent I didn't know I had!

No More Hot Car Rides

I discovered, much to my dismay, that the air conditioning went out in my car. This 90 degree weather has been horrible driving around in. I didn't even call to see how much it would cost because I figured it was alot. That shows you the knowledge I have about cars. Not much at all. I happened to mention it to my neighbor who said he could fix it! I went to the store, got a $9.00 can of recharging stuff, and Riley fixed it in less than five minutes. I sometimes have to turn the air down now because I get too cold!! Happy Day!! Thanks Riley!! :)

Poor Phanta

My kitty Phanta snuck out of our house this week. Only a few of our windows have screens and I opened a kitchen window a few inches to get a cross draft on Tuesday night. I totally forgot it was open. Sometime on Wednesday, after Brian and I left, she figured out how to get out. I find it crazy because she is terrified of the outside. She hates it but Mokie is always trying to get out. Anyways, Phanta figured it out but not Mokie. So I came home from my writing conference to find her gone. I went looking for her and when I got home she was sitting by the door. I was so HAPPY!! Well, she was tramatized and she went and hid. At first Brian and I thought that was all it was. But she wasn't eating, would make a super sad crying sound when we would pick her up and she was limping. So I took her into the vet and turns out she got bit by another cat. Poor kitty is in a lot of pain. I have to give her medicine twice a day - not fun. She is starting to be around us a little but spends most of her time under a storage shelf in my craft room. I haven't been able to get her to eat since she got home but yesterday I remembered she LOVES tuna fish. She actually came out of her hiding space, on her own, to get some! I totally miss my snuggly, purry, follows me everywhere cat. I hope she comes back soon.

I have a new job and quitting is very surreal...

So I have been with DDI Vantage for SEVEN years now! It's crazy how time flies. I have spent the last five years in the same position and must say I have really enjoyed my job. It's very flexible, there is a lot of variety and I can't say I ever really get bored. However, in the last five years my pay has increased a mere $0.62 an hour. That is no misprint there. Plus, I have realized I really like to teach. So I applied for the Alternative Route to Licensure program through the State of Utah and have been hired as a FIFTH GRADE READING TEACHER!!! I am super excited. Any and all suggestions are welcome as I head into my new adventure. Here are some links for my school:

I gave my boss my notice today. My last day won't be until July 9th but I need to train someone to take my job. I had an expectation as to what was going to happen and it didn't go anything like I thought. My boss actually cried and said she was going to miss me! Then she gave me the "form" to fill out. It is still sitting empty on my desk because this just doesn't seem real yet. It will be hard to say good bye to my awesome co-workers, I will really miss the teen moms and having Friday off - but I am so very, very excited for this new adventure!! Yeah to pay increases every year and working with 10 - 11 year olds!!

Preview of house improvements

We are getting NEW WINDOWS and CARPET!! Our windows are horrible. Only three windows have screens, several of them don't open and the draft is so bad that ornaments are always moving when our Christmas tree is up. Now, we will have beautiful windows and I realized the other day that once we get them, I can actually open every single window in our house! Amazing!

And carpet... my feet are so excited. We are carpeting both sets of stairs, the landing and bedroom downstairs and then doing large "rugs" in the two upstairs bedrooms and the living room. That way we can still show off some of the hardwood floor. I had to include the following picture because it is the actual carpet we are getting and the joy our cats already feel about getting carpet. Our windows will be installed in about three weeks and the carpet shortly afterwards. Stay tuned for pictures of the "big" events!

Another project completed! :) more "to do" item crossed off my list! I have had these letters forever and finally got them all painted and put together. I was going to put them on top of my kitchen cupboards but they are too tall! So now to plan B, C, D... They sure are cute though. Now I need to get the letters for winter from my mom. Another benefit of decorating and getting projects done, is that I have more room under my craft table! Yeah for leg room and a cuter house!
